Missouri - Day 2

Captain's log - Road date 10/15/2016

Today's stats
Temperature - low 5 hight 24
Weather - morning cloudy afternoon sunny
Miles traveled - 215

Up at a reasonable time today, checked for bedbugs and all is ok. Had a good breakfast and hit the road around 8:30. Today we're heading south but have a choice of two roads to go. There is the post 1930 Route 66 road which basically follows the local freeway and would be almost impossible to get lost on, or... the route we took, which is the original 1926 road which has more twist and turns then you would see at a Chubby Checker dance off. Picture this:

Turn left just before where highway 72 meets Exit 93
Then take the second left fork in the road
And then turn right where the old school used to be
You get my point I'm sure

All that being said we only got lost twice today. Not sure how we managed that.

Today's world's largest monument can be found in Collinsville, Illinois.
Worlds largest ketchup bottle
Wonder if The Man Holding a Hotdog knows of this place?

We continued through Illinois and eventually crossed the mighty Mississippi River (we may have crossed it twice as we did get lost here) into St Louis, Missouri. We saw the Gateway Arch, but as we now found ourselves on a major interstate highway, we could not stop for a picture, but we did the next best thing. We stopped at the local Harley Davidson store, which was also called "Gateway Harley Davidson" (close enough right?).

The problem here was this dealership shares the same name as the company I work for, so obviously I had to purchase some logo items which has now caused some issues with what I can pack on my bike. On the plus side, my wife won't have to wash many of my clothes as I'll have to throw them away to make room.

Finally we made it to our destination for the evening which was at the Wagon Wheel Motel in Cuba, Missouri. This was another iconic motel on the route, but did not disappoint (as the previous hotel did). At the reception desk I met the man that wrote one of the "Route 66" books I had purchase to research for this trip. Managed to get an autograph and a photo.

After checking in we settled in easily, enjoyed a pre dinner cocktail, then proceeded to pig out (literally) at the Missouri Hick Bar-B-Q, and as the sign says, this food was to die for.

After devouring what had to be a whole pig, we charged our glasses once again and sat around a fire that several of us tried to make but that only Jack could light.

The flickering of the flames mellowed us all out and we eventually surcomed and headed to our rooms for the night. Well all but one who crashed a little earlier than the rest of us
