Illinois, Day 1

Captain's Log - Road Date 10/14/2016

Today's stats
Temperature - Low 5, high 19
Weather - Sunny
Miles traveled - 205

When it comes to renting motorcycles I think it is fair to say, "this ain't our first rodeo!" Over the years we have rented several times and have always been disappointed in the fact that it usually takes 1/2 day to get all the paper work and bike orientation done. But this year we were smart (or so we thought). We managed to do all our paperwork on line with the only requirement left was to show our drivers license and passport at the counter, a two minute ordeal at best. And two minutes is all it took for the final paperwork. However, today there was a group of 27 riders heading out before us so after a 1/2 day of waiting we finally got the bike orientation over with and hit the road. Maybe next year...
All set to go

The first hour of so after leaving Eaglerider Motorcycle Rental's (for all your motorcycle needs) had us in stop and go traffic trying to find the start of the Historic Route 66 highway. After several stop lights and one freeway we found exit 268 and the start of our journey. Away from the hustle and noise of the city and freeways, we settled in, all in formation.

In reading about Route 66, you learn that a number of the "World's Largest" monuments can be found along the way. Part of our mission is to photograph these monuments for our followers to see, and today was no exception.
World's largest spacemen holding a rocket

Worlds largest man holding a hot dog (seriously, we're not making this up)

Worlds largest covered wagon (with Abe Lincoln reading a book)
(Note we didn't actually stop for this one, photo courtesy of Google)

For lunch we pulled into a small town and found a very friendly restaurant called Hayden's Crossing. We really were not expecting much, but the meals were actually very good.

Because of the late start today we did not get to stop by some of the museums and other famous spots along the route. Towards the end of the day we hurried past Lincoln's home and his burial site so regrettably have no photos to share.

With the sun having set we did finally make it to our destination, The Route 66 Hotel & Convention Centre (I think the convention centre was added later). The sign out front and the lobby held out promise that this was going to be a nice place to rest our weary butts. The individual rooms, however, was a different story. I'm sure in it's hay day this was a great hotel but today, not so much. Tomorrow, when we get to our next destination I think we're all going to shower twice.

What greeted us in the lobby

The evening was not a loss though. After a short walk we found an all you can eat soup, salad, pizza and fried chicken restaurant. For $12.00 a person they also threw in an unlimited sofa fountain.

Love at first sight

Tomorrow we head to Missouri
